It’s a hard life...

Every day I learn the life of a struggling author is a hard one. It would be wonderful to know what your doing is good. It would be wonderful to know there is an audience for what you’re doing. It would be wonderful to know I have a future in writing.

The more I read about how to write, the more I get confused… i.e. plot, pace, tense, arcs and of course good true to life dialog.

I have come to the conclusion, to keep on keeping on. I am going to write the way I write regardless what the “experts” say. It has hurt my craft more than it has helped.

I was just wondering how you all, fight through the hard life as a writer?

What keeps you composing and editing and revising?

And what is the best piece of advice that has helped your writing?

Thx for any comment you might leave.

  1. Write what you like to read. Don't compromise on that.

If you like it, that's enough and far better than if everyone liked it...but you.

  2. Heh, I think I've come to a similar conclusion. I think I had been conforming to "rules" too much, and bludgeoning my writing in the process. I guess it comes down to know when the rule works and when it does not.

  3. Wouldn't it be great if editors and agents did door to door check ins? You know, they went house to house looking for writers...

I think it's important to write what makes you happy. Make it the best you can possibly make it and then look for a publisher or agent...The thing is you have to find the right match for you and your work. It takes a lot of time to write a novel and it takes a lot of time to find the right home for it....Determination is key. (That's what I tell myself anyway.)

When I feel like giving up I ask myself what would I do instead...I can't imagine doing anything else. What about you?

  4. The best advice.... Self-doubt is the life of a writer. If you have self-doubt, you're on the right track.

    Have a great day!

  5. The alternative to writing is not writing. Could you do that? Writers HAVE to write; they have no choice. Stop thinking about whether or not you should stop. You couldn't. Do read the good writing of others and learn why it is good. Emulate if doing so doesn't conflict with being your natural self.
