Self Publishing.

Have you ever thought about self publishing? (I know Steph you don’t think about publishing, so humor me…)
I just met an author who tried to get published but met rejection after rejection. He felt his book we good enough so he went the self publishing route.

After the second book, in the series of 4, He had sold enough books to catch the eye of a big name publisher and signed a four book deal worth a lot of $$$.

I wish I had written his name down and the book not to mention the publisher. Next time I talk to him, I will. When I get closer to being ready he said he would be more than willing to help where he can...

Long story short, have you ever thought about going the self publishing route? If so what stopped you, and if you did would you recommend it to others. (I thought I would never go the self publishing route, but after talking with him I am having second thoughts. I know it take a lot more investment of money and time, but might be worth it.)

Thx for reading and any response you might leave.

  1. My sister has done it. I can't sell diddly so I doubt it would work for me, but others have found success. I wish people success any way that works.

  2. Stephanie's right--I self-published my book of ghost stories, mainly because it was a regional book, and thus would not be likely to appeal to a national audience. In only a few months, though, I'd made back my expenses, including a week-long trip to Kansas to do book signings.

Self-publishing success depends on two things: the self-publisher, and the author. No, three things--the book is the most important.

I'm an English teacher, editor, etc., so I knew my text was pretty clean, but I would still recommend having others read your book--and if you don't have training in grammar, pay to have your book edited!

    That's my two cents.

  3. Great forum opportunity. I work as a self-publishing consultant and have experience personally and with authors in the traditional realm.

There really are so many things to consider when looking at your options. Getting those details in order and taking charge of your work is what separates a 'writer' from an 'author'.

Editing, Design, Marketing, Distribution, Sales, etc. There are a handful of self-publishing options that offer pretty comprehensive services all under one roof. Only one I know that does with a high degree of personal rep assistance, Outskirts Press. http://outskirtspress.com

    That's my 1.5 cents.

  4. I'm a supporter of alternative publishing models. Self-publishing works great for some projects. Also useful is cyberfunded creativity or crowdfunding, where you sell direct to your audience. I do that with poetry because I write so much, conventional editors can't always keep up. Last year I sold 3 times as many poems direct to my audience as I did to magazines. I have also supported other people's projects, including some where a crowdfunded serial turned into a self-published hardcopy book.

  5. I've just self-published my books, so it will be a while until I can say if it works or not. I'll get back to you.
